There’s a fox in the chicken run, A diamond down the loo The scarecrow’s fallen over, don’t know what to do There’s a tattered coat in the yard hanging off a stick Trainers on a power line thrown up by a dick There’s weevil in the cotton field, poison in the well The microwave just caught on fire, the pick up’s shot to hell Things are not looking good Things are not looking good Life don’t go the way it should Things are not looking good. Momma’s in the counting house eating curds and whey Poppa’s in the barrel house each and every day My baby brother’s in the barn cooking up the meth Little sister’s on the own, she’s tweeting bout herself I tell them of the benefits of staying on at school They shake their heads and say I’m just a crazy old fool Things are not looking good Things are not looking good Life don’t go the way it should Things are not looking good The azaleas are overgrown the clematis is parched Arthritis is my newest friend I’ve got a fallen arch Relative to lots of folks I’m living like a king I know it’s just a bubble, a bubble that I’m in A lepton fired in CERN arrived before it left Albert Einstein’s universe is just about to melt I said things not looking good Yeah things are not looking good Life don’t go work out like it should Things are not looking good When I started on this road I looked like Yves Montand Danced like Fred Astaire sang like Sarah Vaughn Keeping up the vanity you’re howling at the moon A stranger said the other day I’m like an ancient ruin The populis is polarised, sense has flown away New shit always happens I wish it all away Things are not looking good Things are not looking good Life don’t go the way it should Things are not looking good Things are not looking good Things are not looking good

Here’s to the roses you sent, that were never delivered Here’s to the lines that I wrote, that you never read Here’s to the pain that I feel that I never considered Here’s to the life that we lived, that’s inside my head Here’s to the pictures I’ve got, where you’re right beside me Here’s to the vases of flowers alone on the shelf Here’s to the postcard you sent from the shores of oblivion Here’s to the goodbye you said that you really meant You’re out on your own, I’m all alone, Here I am stuck in a house, that once was a home Here’s to laying the stone of my imperfections Here’s to the towers we built upon sand Here’s to the way we both lost all our patience Here’s to the things about us, we both couldn’t stand You’re out on your own, I’m all alone Here I am stuck in a house, that once was a home Here’s to the hope that you find a better tomorrow Here’s to the best of our yesterdays, Here’s to the dreams that we shared before your sorrow, Came out of somewhere and blew them all away You’re out on your own, I’m all alone Here I am stuck in a house, that once was a home Here I am stuck in a house, that once was a home

Get Even 03:09
It’s nice to get up, it’s good to get down It’s fun when your vibe, is all over town It’s great to be loved, to have something to believe in But take it from me, It’s better to get even You’ve washed the car, you’ve mowed the lawn You’ve done your jobs, from dusk till dawn You’ve gone to school, you’ve shined you shoes, You read the paper, heard the news You’ve learned the truth, you’ve seen the thieving, It’s time to get even For once in your life, you get to pick your own fight You may win, you may lose, but’s you who gets to choose I live in London, it’s in the UK I try to get by, I’m doin OK I work real hard, I work to play After all these years, I got something to say. Try to be nice, but take my advice, Get even. It’s nice to get up, it’s good to get down It’s fun when your vibe, is all over town It’s great to be loved, to have something to believe in But take it from me, It’s better to get even Try to be nice, but take my advice, Get Even.

When we were young, we played hide and seek You found me then, I was yours to keep. You made your choice, you had to try, You had to know, you had to go Now we’re Oceans Apart As clear as I am, about what I want About what I need, that’s just about me. Where’s the fun, in staying at home There’s a whole wide world, to adventure and roam. But now we’re Oceans Apart Who oh oh, We’re Oceans Apart This separation, could tear us apart But even through this, you’re always in my heart But now we’re Oceans Apart Who oh oh, we’re Oceans Apart But now we’re Oceans Apart Who oh oh, we’re Oceans Apart

Hard Times 03:57
A promise was like a prayer to her She’d been hurt so many times before Every time he walked out the door Dropping off the kids at school, time to get the shopping done Then it’s straight back home. All the things that she had learned, when she lived on her own Mean nothing now that’s all gone Woh oh, It’s Hard Times Yeah, Hard Times She thought he was the chosen one, there was magic and plenty of fun But my how things can change When she found out that he had strayed, she forgave him once for the life they made But it all started to seem strange Woh Oh oh oh, it’s Hard Times Yeah yeah yeah yeah Hard Times Woh oh oh oh, Hard Times Yeah yeah yeah it’s Hard Times Hell hath no fury like a woman scorn, her kind of love couldn’t be reborn She’d always done what she thought she should. Now they’re living separate lives, she’s a woman not a wife When she was done with that man, she was done for good. Woh oh oh oh, it’s Hard Times Yeah yeah yeah yeah Hard Times Yeah yeah yeah yeah Hard Times Woh oh oh, it’s Hard Times A promise was like a prayer to her She’d been hurt so many times before Every time he walked out the door

Piggin' Out 02:39
I like my oysters by the dozen, I like a seafood smorgasbord I buy my whole foods from my cousin. Before I eat I praise my lord. Yes my taste are Continental, I’m into wurst and sauerkraut A carbonara makes me mental Now that’s what I call Piggin’ Out I love all kinds of flavours, I love all kinds of tastes And every one I savour, as I shove them in my face I really like a mashed potato I much prefer it now to blow And yes my passion’s sublimated And my brain’s a little slow And though I still enjoy a blow out It’s not what I am all about A friendly meal around a table Now that’s what I call piggin’ out I love all kinds of sweet things, I love all kinds of spice And I just like to eat things, and I offer my advice We’re in a world of toil and trouble Of our own making there’s no doubt If you believe in Carpe Diem There’s nothing wrong with piggin’ out We’re in a world of toil and trouble Of our own making there’s no doubt If you believe in Carpe Diem There’s nothing wrong with piggin’ out If you’re and honest human being Don’t be ashamed of piggin’ out

I made a deal with an angel so I could see her everyday, She protects me from a devil, the kind that just won’t go away And I can see her in the mirror, every time I go astray In a world of fears and woe, I know every where I go I see an angel everyday Not every angel is sainted, that’s what the good book says The ones we know have fallen, are the ones who share our beds, I met an angel and she got inside my head. We’re both not perfect, but we’re happier instead. I made a deal with an angel so I can see her everyday, She protects me from a devil, the kind that just won’t go away And can see her in the mirror, Anytime I go astray In a world of fears and woe, I know every where I go I see an angel everyday Every angel is different, each and every one Some are more earthbound, others fly towards the sun My angel’s perfect, she understands my needs, She shines a light on my thoughts and words and deeds I made a deal with an angel, so I can see her everyday She protects me from a devil, the kind that just won’t go away And I can see her in the mirror, every time I go astray In a world of fears and woe, I know every where I go I see an angel everyday I see and angel everyday

Making Up For Lost Time I’m making up for lost time, wide awake and feel fine I’ve given up the past and feeling blue, I’m making up for lost time, walking down a straight line I’m still alive and that’s all for loving you I used to think that life’s a mystery And everything is better with a friend Now I know how it’s gonna be We’re just going to get it in the end That’s why I’m making up for lost time, wide awake and feel fine Forget about the past and start something new I’m making up for lost time, walking down a straight line I’m still alive and that’s all for loving you We can walk we can talk, we can surrey all over town In the park, down the dock, wherever pleasure’s found I’ll be making up for lost time, wide awake and feel fine Forget about the things we didn’t do Yeah I’m making up for lost time, walking down a straight line I’m still alive and that’s all for loving you I’m still alive and that’s all for loving you
11.
Will you take me as I am, after all we’ve said and done? Can you find it in your heart, If I apologize, can we make a new start? You have made me what I am, I can show my better side I can be an honest man, you’re my confidant I’ve got nothing to hide Devoted to you, Devoted to you After all that we’ve been through I’m still devoted to you We have gone from strength to strength As the months turn into years I would go to any lengths, to keep you safe To calm all your fears Devoted to you, Devoted to you After all that we’ve been through I’m still devoted to you But I won’t compromise, And I just can’t disguise, You mean so much to me, Creating a life of memories. Devoted to you, Devoted to you After all that we’ve been through I’m still Devoted to you, Devoted to you After all that we’ve been through I’m still devoted to you

about

The 6-panel CD artwork is a reflection on the past and the present with a wonderful recreation of an old group photo including Philip as a young man and his passport photo when he left his Canadian homeland for the UK in the 1970's. That means country, roots, blues, ragtime, ballads and more – as seen through the eyes and written with the pen of a Montreal native, albeit one who’s been holed up in the UK for many years. This is, after all, the man who co-wrote ‘There’s A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He’s Elvis’ with Kirsty MacColl

released April 24, 2020

Philip called on friends from across his career: produced by Paul Cuddeford (Prefab Sprout, Energy Orchard), who also played guitar, the album features cameos from guitarist Martin Belmont (Graham Parker, Nick Lowe), Elvis Costello & The Attractions’ drummer Pete Thomas, bassist Davey Faragher (Costello, Cracker), vocalist Sharlene Hector (Basement Jaxx), pianist Geraint Watkins and fiddler Bob Loveday (Penguin Café Orchestra). The album also features two tracks, ‘Angel Everyday’ and ‘Devoted To You’, recorded with Scottish songwriter and producer – and fellow Fretsore artist – Jack Henderson, whose own impressive CV includes stints with the likes of Marc Ribot and Joan As Policewoman.
